Why be a SAFE Peer Educator?

Excellent Training

SAFE Peers receive training in counseling skills, group facilitation, crisis management, ethics, alcohol and substance abuse issues and Motivational Interviewing techniques. Motivational Interviewing is an empirically validated technique for helping people stop risky behavior. Peers have attended conferences and presented research paid by the program.

Real 1 to 1 Peer Education!

Provide 1 to 1 feedback to high risk drinking students. SAFE peers will see 25-40 participants in a year. One of the few peer programs in the nation providing this experience.

Peer educators are affiliates of UCSD Counseling and Psychological Services.

Professional Supervision

SAFE peers are supervised by psychologists, interns and post-doctoral fellows.

An award winning intervention program

The SAFE Program recently won honors from the Automobile Club of Southern California and the Center for College Health and Safety. "UCSD's program is impressive," noted Steven Bloch, senior research associate for the Auto Club and program coordinator. "This is an evidence-based approach, effective in reducing high-risk drinking."

An award winning screening program

Participate in National Alcohol Screening Day and Alcohol Awareness Week. Screen students & speak with high risk drinkers. For the past 3 years SAFE has been awarded Top 10 Campus in the Nation!

Make a Difference

Our research shows that SAFE peer education is effective at reducing harmful alcohol use in college student peers.

Have Fun!

Work with a team of motivated, talented and positive people.
